The ticket

Arrangement in Black, No. 3: Sir Henry Irving as Philip II of Spain is a painting by James McNeill Whistler (American, Lowell, Massachusetts 1834–1903 London), dated 1876, reworked 1885. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 84 3/4 x 42 3/4 in. (215.3 x 108.6 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Rogers Fund, 1910.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 2,038 × 4,000 pixels — 8.2 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 6.8 × 13.3 in. The painting itself measures about 42.8 × 84.8 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
