The ticket

Bringing Down Marble from the Quarries to Carrara is a painting by John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856–1925 London), dated 1911. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 28 1/8 x 36 1/8 in. (71.4 x 91.8 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Harris Brisbane Dick Fund, 1917.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,783 × 2,947 pixels — 11.1 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 12.6 × 9.8 in. The painting itself measures about 36.1 × 28.1 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
