The ticket

Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts (High Tide) is a painting by Winslow Homer (American, Boston, Massachusetts 1836–1910 Prouts Neck, Maine), dated 1870. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 26 × 38 in. (66 × 96.5 cm) Framed: 38 3/8 × 50 1/4 × 5 3/4 in. (97.5 × 127.6 × 14.6 cm) Glazing (when needed): 26 1/2 × 38 1/2 in. (67.3 × 97.8 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Gift of Mrs. William F. Milton, 1923.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 4,000 × 2,753 pixels — 11 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 13.3 × 9.2 in. The painting itself measures about 38 × 26 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
