The ticket

Sketch for View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm (The Oxbow) is a painting by Thomas Cole (American, Lancashire 1801–1848 Catskill, New York), dated 1836. Oil and pencil on composition board. Size on the museum record: 5 1/2 x 9 3/8 in. (14 x 23.8 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Purchase, Gift of Mrs. Delancey Thorn Grant, in memory of her mother, Louise Floyd-Jones Thorn, by exchange and Friends of the American Wing Fund, 2014.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,921 × 2,458 pixels — 9.6 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 13.1 × 8.2 in. That is bigger than the painting itself, which measures about 9.4 × 5.5 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
