The ticket

The Fort of L'Esseillon, Val de la Maurienne, France is a work on paper by Joseph Mallord William Turner (British, London 1775–1851 London), dated 1835–36. Watercolor. Size on the museum record: sheet: 7 3/4 x 11 in. (19.7 x 28 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Bequest of Walter C. Baker, 1971.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,536 × 2,422 pixels — 8.6 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 11.8 × 8.1 in. That is roughly life-size: the work on paper itself measures about 11 × 7.8 in.Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original’s size rather than blowing it up, mat it generously, and keep it out of direct sun — the same rules the museum follows for the real one.
