The ticket

The Fountain, No. 1: The Wounded Indian Slaking His Death Thirst is a work on paper by Thomas Cole (American, Lancashire 1801–1848 Catskill, New York), dated 1843. Graphite and white gouache on green wove paper. Size on the museum record: 7 x 9 3/4 in. (17.8 x 24.8 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Gift of Erving Wolf Foundation, in memory of Diane R. Wolf, 1977.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 4,000 × 2,933 pixels — 11.7 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 13.3 × 9.8 in. That is bigger than the work on paper itself, which measures about 9.8 × 7 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original’s size rather than blowing it up, mat it generously, and keep it out of direct sun — the same rules the museum follows for the real one.
