How big can you print it?

Standard frame sizes, turned to match the artwork. "Crops" is how much of the picture you lose filling that frame edge to edge — or keep it all and let a mat take up the difference.

The ticket

A Street Scene in Seville is a painting by Thomas Eakins (American, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1844–1916 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), dated 1870. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 62 3/4 × 42 in. (159.4 × 106.7 cm) Framed: 70 1/2 × 50 in. (179.1 × 127 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Gift of the Wolf Family, in honor of Erving and Joyce Wolf, 2023.

In The Met's records, A Street Scene in Seville is an oil on canvas credited to Thomas Eakins. The museum dates it 1870; it sits in the The American Wing department as accession 2023.562. It shows a built place, with architecture and figures that read as a small stage set; the detail rewards a larger print. The Met's scan measures 1,263 × 1,979 pixels, which prints about 4.2 × 6.6 in at 300 dpi and 8.4 × 13.2 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Because it runs tall, it wants a vertical frame; compare the crop percentage across sizes before you choose. Its golden tones pair naturally with a gold or walnut frame, or go black for a sharper, more modern contrast. Paintings reproduce best on matte paper, since gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for. Light it from above with a soft warm bulb, hang the centre of the picture near 57 inches, and it will read as intended instead of as decoration.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 1,263 × 1,979 pixels — 2.5 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 4.2 × 6.6 in. The painting itself measures about 42 × 62.8 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
