The ticket

Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889 is a painting by James Ensor (Belgian, Ostend 1860–1949 Ostend), dated 1888. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 252.5 × 430.5 cm. Held by J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the free scan comes from Wikimedia Commons.

Christ arrives in nineteenth-century Brussels on a donkey, while a crowd of leering masks and clowns fills the street. He is small and hard to find. Ensor painted it in 1888, and the artists' group Les XX refused to show it. The painting lampooned politicians, the church and his own country. Its colour is wild and its mood is carnival, and a wall-sized print is as chaotic as it should be.

The work is in the public domain, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 12,900 × 7,352 pixels — 94.8 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 43 × 24.5 in. The painting itself measures about 169.5 × 99.4 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
