The ticket

Four-master and Two Three-masters Anchored near a Fortified Island, from "The Sailing Vessels" is a print by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Netherlandish, Breda (?) ca. 1525–1569 Brussels), dated 1561–65. Engraving and etching; first state of three. Size on the museum record: Plate: 8 7/8 × 11 9/16 in. (22.5 × 29.4 cm) Sheet: 10 15/16 × 13 in. (27.8 × 33 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Bequest of Alexandrine Sinsheimer, 1958.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,811 × 2,918 pixels — 11.1 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 12.7 × 9.7 in. That is roughly life-size: the print itself measures about 11.6 × 8.9 in.Line work lives or dies on contrast. Print it on a smooth, bright paper and give it a wide mat: small graphic work drowns in a thin frame and a big empty border makes it look like it came out of a print room drawer.
