The ticket

The Harvesters is a painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Netherlandish, Breda (?) ca. 1525–1569 Brussels), dated 1565. Oil on oak. Size on the museum record: Overall, including added strips at top, bottom, and right, 46 7/8 x 63 3/4 in. (119 x 162 cm); original painted surface 45 7/8 x 62 7/8 in. (116.5 x 159.5 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its European Paintings collection — Rogers Fund, 1919.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,811 × 2,809 pixels — 10.7 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 12.7 × 9.4 in. The painting itself measures about 63.8 × 46.9 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
