The ticket

Gamecocks is a work on paper by Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, Tokyo (Edo) 1760–1849 Tokyo (Edo)), dated dated 1838. Hanging scroll; ink and color on silk. Size on the museum record: Image: 21 3/4 × 33 7/16 in. (55.3 × 85 cm) Overall with mounting: 59 7/16 × 40 3/16 in. (151 × 102 cm) Overall with knobs: 59 7/16 × 63 3/8 in. (151 × 160.9 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Asian Art collection — Charles Stewart Smith Collection, Gift of Mrs. Charles Stewart Smith, Charles Stewart Smith Jr., and Howard Caswell Smith, in memory of Charles Stewart Smith, 1914.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 2,000 × 1,500 pixels — 3 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 6.7 × 5 in. The work on paper itself measures about 33.5 × 21.8 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original’s size rather than blowing it up, mat it generously, and keep it out of direct sun — the same rules the museum follows for the real one.
