The ticket

Hummingbird and Apple Blossoms is a painting by Martin Johnson Heade (1819–1904), dated 1875. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 12 3/16 x 14 1/8 in. (31 x 35.9 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Gift of Mrs. J. Augustus Barnard, 1979.

The Met catalogs Hummingbird and Apple Blossoms as an oil on canvas by Martin Johnson Heade. The museum dates it 1875, and files it under accession 1979.490.11 in The American Wing. Flowers and leaves carry the colour here, which makes it an easy piece to build a room palette around. The Met's scan measures 3,795 × 3,285 pixels, which prints about 12.7 × 10.9 in at 300 dpi and 25.3 × 21.9 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Its wide proportions sit naturally over a sofa, console or bed, and the crop figures in the set builder show what a standard frame would trim. Its warm reds and oranges suit walnut or gold, which deepen the glow instead of washing it out. Paintings reproduce best on matte paper, since gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for. Light it from above with a soft warm bulb, hang the centre of the picture near 57 inches, and it will read as intended instead of as decoration.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,795 × 3,285 pixels — 12.5 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 12.7 × 11 in. That is roughly life-size: the painting itself measures about 14.1 × 12.2 in.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
