The ticket

Madame Georges Charpentier (Marguerite-Louise Lemonnier, 1848–1904) and Her Children, Georgette-Berthe (1872–1945) and Paul-Emile-Charles (1875–1895) is a painting by Auguste Renoir (French, Limoges 1841–1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer), dated 1878. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 60 1/2 x 74 7/8 in. (153.7 x 190.2 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its European Paintings collection — Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Collection, Wolfe Fund, 1907.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 4,000 × 3,254 pixels — 13 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 13.3 × 10.8 in. The painting itself measures about 74.9 × 60.5 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
