The ticket

Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace is a painting by Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, Zundert 1853–1890 Auvers-sur-Oise), dated 1885. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 17 3/8 x 15 in. (44.1 x 38.1 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its European Paintings collection — Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer Hays, 1984.

The Met catalogs Peasant Woman Cooking by a Fireplace as an oil on canvas by Vincent van Gogh. The museum dates it 1885, and files it under accession 1984.393 in European Paintings. The subject is a person, so the face is the anchor. Hang it with the eyes near the centre line instead of floating high on the wall. The Met's scan measures 3,227 × 3,698 pixels, which prints about 10.8 × 12.3 in at 300 dpi and 21.5 × 24.7 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Its tall proportions suit a hallway, a narrow wall or the gap beside a door, and the set builder shows how much each standard frame would crop. Its golden tones pair naturally with a gold or walnut frame, or go black for a sharper, more modern contrast. Paintings reproduce best on matte paper, since gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for. Light it from above with a soft warm bulb, hang the centre of the picture near 57 inches, and it will read as intended instead of as decoration.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,227 × 3,698 pixels — 11.9 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 10.8 × 12.3 in. The painting itself measures about 15 × 17.4 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
