The ticket

Stage Fort across Gloucester Harbor is a painting by Fitz Henry Lane (formerly Fitz Hugh Lane) (1804–1865), dated 1862. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 38 x 60 in. (96.5 x 152.4 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Purchase, Rogers and Fletcher Funds, Erving and Joyce Wolf Fund, Raymond J. Horowitz Gift, Bequest of Richard De Wolfe Brixey, by exchange, and John Osgood and Elizabeth Amis Cameron Blanchard Memorial Fund, 1978.

Stage Fort across Gloucester Harbor is an oil on canvas by Fitz Henry Lane (formerly Fitz Hugh Lane), part of The Met's open-access collection. The museum dates it 1862, and files it under accession 1978.203 in The American Wing. The subject is water and weather, so the sky-to-sea balance carries the picture; keep the horizon level when you hang it. The Met's scan measures 3,811 × 2,281 pixels, which prints about 12.7 × 7.6 in at 300 dpi and 25.4 × 15.2 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Its wide proportions sit naturally over a sofa, console or bed, and the crop figures in the set builder show what a standard frame would trim. Its warm reds and oranges suit walnut or gold, which deepen the glow instead of washing it out. Paintings reproduce best on matte paper, since gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for. Add a small picture light and keep the centre of the piece around 57 inches from the floor; those two choices make a reproduction look deliberate.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,811 × 2,281 pixels — 8.7 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 12.7 × 7.6 in. The painting itself measures about 60 × 38 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
