The ticket

Studies of a Goat is a work on paper by Eugène Delacroix (French, Charenton-Saint-Maurice 1798–1863 Paris), dated 1798–1863. Graphite on wove paper. Size on the museum record: 6-1/4 x 8-5/8 in. (15.9 x 21.9 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Gift of Elmer Adler, 1925.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,172 × 2,359 pixels — 7.5 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 10.6 × 7.9 in. That is bigger than the work on paper itself, which measures about 8.6 × 6.3 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original’s size rather than blowing it up, mat it generously, and keep it out of direct sun — the same rules the museum follows for the real one.
