How big can you print it?

Standard frame sizes, turned to match the artwork. "Crops" is how much of the picture you lose filling that frame edge to edge — or keep it all and let a mat take up the difference.

The ticket

Surprised! (Tiger in a Tropical Storm) is a painting by Henri Rousseau (French, Laval 1844–1910 Paris), dated 1891. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 129.8 × 161.9 cm. Held by The National Gallery, London; the free scan comes from Wikimedia Commons.

A tiger crouches in a green storm, mouth open, about to pounce on something outside the frame. The rain is drawn as silver threads and the lightning is a streak across the corner. The National Gallery bought it in 1972. Rousseau had been mocked by critics for years, but this picture is one of the main reasons he is now loved. Put it in the nursery or anywhere you want to start a story.

The work is in the public domain, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 5,285 × 4,226 pixels — 22.3 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 17.6 × 14.1 in. The painting itself measures about 63.7 × 51.1 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
