The ticket

The Dirty Bride or The Wedding of Mopsus and Nisa is a work on paper by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Netherlandish, Breda (?) ca. 1525–1569 Brussels), dated ca. 1566. Pen and black-brown ink on white-prepared partially carved block of applewood. Size on the museum record: Overall: 10 3/8 x 16 3/8 x 1 1/8 in. (26.4 x 41.6 x 2.9 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Harris Brisbane Dick Fund, 1932.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,925 × 2,588 pixels — 10.2 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 13.1 × 8.6 in. That is bigger than the work on paper itself, which measures about 1.1 × 16.4 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original’s size rather than blowing it up, mat it generously, and keep it out of direct sun — the same rules the museum follows for the real one.
