The ticket

A Shepherdess with Her Flock is a work on paper by Jean-François Millet (French, Gruchy 1814–1875 Barbizon), dated ca. 1852. Conté crayon with stumping on laid paper. Size on the museum record: Overall: 13 x 18 1/2in. (33 x 47 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — H. O. Havemeyer Collection, Bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, 1929.

A Shepherdess with Her Flock is a conté crayon with stumping on laid paper by Jean-François Millet, part of The Met's open-access collection. The museum dates it ca. 1852 (accession 29.100.116, Drawings and Prints). Spend a minute with the composition before choosing a size: notice where the eye lands first and where it rests. The Met's scan measures 3,773 × 2,662 pixels, which prints about 12.6 × 8.9 in at 300 dpi and 25.2 × 17.7 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Its wide proportions sit naturally over a sofa, console or bed, and the crop figures in the set builder show what a standard frame would trim. Its muted earth tones are forgiving: natural wood softens the palette, walnut deepens it and black frames it like a gallery. Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original's scale instead of blowing it up, and keep it out of direct sun like the museum does. A warm picture light a few inches above the frame does more for a print than any paper upgrade, and the hanging centre line belongs near 57 inches.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,773 × 2,662 pixels — 10 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 12.6 × 8.9 in. The work on paper itself measures about 18.5 × 13 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original’s size rather than blowing it up, mat it generously, and keep it out of direct sun — the same rules the museum follows for the real one.
