The ticket

Abraham Casting out Hagar and Ishmael is a print by Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606–1669 Amsterdam), dated 1637. Etching with touches of drypoint. Size on the museum record: Sheet: 5 1/4 x 3 15/16 in. (13.3 x 10cm) Plate: 4 15/16 x 3 3/4 in. (12.6 x 9.6cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Gift of Marietta Morchand, 1994.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 2,505 × 3,308 pixels — 8.3 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 8.4 × 11 in. That is bigger than the print itself, which measures about 3.9 × 5.2 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Line work lives or dies on contrast. Print it on a smooth, bright paper and give it a wide mat: small graphic work drowns in a thin frame and a big empty border makes it look like it came out of a print room drawer.
