The ticket

Abraham Entertaining the Angels is a print by Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606–1669 Amsterdam), dated 1656. Etching with drypoint, very light plate tone. Size on the museum record: sheet: 6 1/2 x 5 7/16 in. (16.5 x 13.8 cm) plate: 6 1/4 x 5 3/16 in. (15.9 x 13.2 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Gift of Henry Walters, by exchange, 1923.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,066 × 3,634 pixels — 11.1 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 10.2 × 12.1 in. That is bigger than the print itself, which measures about 5.4 × 6.5 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Line work lives or dies on contrast. Print it on a smooth, bright paper and give it a wide mat: small graphic work drowns in a thin frame and a big empty border makes it look like it came out of a print room drawer.
