The ticket

Cottage among Trees is a work on paper by Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606–1669 Amsterdam), dated ca. 1650. Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash, on paper washed with brown. Size on the museum record: 6 3/4 x 10 7/8 in. (17.1 x 27.6 cm); vertical strip 6 3/4 x 1 1/4 in. (17.2 x 3.2 cm) added by artist to the sheet at right. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — H. O. Havemeyer Collection, Bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, 1929.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 2,000 × 1,261 pixels — 2.5 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 6.7 × 4.2 in. The work on paper itself measures about 10.9 × 6.7 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original’s size rather than blowing it up, mat it generously, and keep it out of direct sun — the same rules the museum follows for the real one.
