How big can you print it?

Standard frame sizes, turned to match the artwork. "Crops" is how much of the picture you lose filling that frame edge to edge — or keep it all and let a mat take up the difference.

The ticket

Imaginary View of Venice, houses at left with figures on terraces, a domed church at center in the background, boats and boat-sheds below, and a seated man observing from a wall at right in the foreground, from "Views" (Vedute altre prese da i luoghi altre ideate da Antonio Canal) is a print by Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) (Italian, Venice 1697–1768 Venice), dated 1741. Etching; undivided plate, only state. Size on the museum record: Sheet (Trimmed): 11 13/16 × 17 3/16 in. (30 × 43.7 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Purchase, Gift of Mary V.T. Eberstadt and Bequest of Gertrude Moira Flanagan, by exchange, 1973.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,909 × 2,731 pixels — 10.7 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 13 × 9.1 in. The print itself measures about 17.2 × 11.8 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Line work lives or dies on contrast. Print it on a smooth, bright paper and give it a wide mat: small graphic work drowns in a thin frame and a big empty border makes it look like it came out of a print room drawer.
