The ticket

Piazza San Marco is a painting by Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal) (Italian, Venice 1697–1768 Venice), dated late 1720s. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 27 x 44 1/4 in. (68.6 x 112.4 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its European Paintings collection — Purchase, Mrs. Charles Wrightsman Gift, 1988.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,971 × 2,448 pixels — 9.7 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 13.2 × 8.2 in. The painting itself measures about 44.3 × 27 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
