The ticket

James MacAlister (Sketch) is a painting by Thomas Eakins (American, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1844–1916 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), dated ca. 1895. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 14 1/4 x 10 1/4 in. (36.8 x 26 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its The American Wing collection — Bequest of Miss Adelaide Milton de Groot (1876-1967), 1967.

In The Met's records, James MacAlister (Sketch) is an oil on canvas credited to Thomas Eakins. The museum dates it ca. 1895; it sits in the The American Wing department as accession 67.187.206. People are the subject, and the grouping and gestures matter more than any single face; avoid cropping the edges. The Met's scan measures 1,425 × 2,179 pixels, which prints about 4.8 × 7.3 in at 300 dpi and 9.5 × 14.5 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Its tall proportions suit a hallway, a narrow wall or the gap beside a door, and the set builder shows how much each standard frame would crop. Its golden tones pair naturally with a gold or walnut frame, or go black for a sharper, more modern contrast. Paintings reproduce best on matte paper, since gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for. Light it from above with a soft warm bulb, hang the centre of the picture near 57 inches, and it will read as intended instead of as decoration.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 1,425 × 2,179 pixels — 3.1 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 4.8 × 7.3 in. The painting itself measures about 10.2 × 14.5 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
