How big can you print it?

Standard frame sizes, turned to match the artwork. "Crops" is how much of the picture you lose filling that frame edge to edge — or keep it all and let a mat take up the difference.

The ticket

The Ghost of Kohada Koheiji is a woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, Tokyo (Edo) 1760–1849 Tokyo (Edo)), dated ca. 1831–32. Woodblock print. Held by Hyaku monogatari series, Edo period; the free scan comes from Wikimedia Commons.

From Hokusai's One Hundred Ghost Stories. The actor Kohada Koheiji was murdered by his wife's lover, and his ghost returns to haunt the couple. He peers over the net from above, wide-eyed and bony, while the man below sleeps. Hokusai only finished five of the planned hundred prints. It is smaller than the Great Wave in scope and much scarier, so it makes a good alternative for anyone who has had enough of the wave.

The work is in the public domain, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 1,312 × 1,800 pixels — 2.4 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 4.4 × 6 in. Woodblock prints were made to be printed again and again — a reproduction is in keeping with the whole point of the thing. Keep the paper tone warm. A printer that bleaches the ground to white-white flattens it into clip art.
