How big can you print it?

Standard frame sizes, turned to match the artwork. "Crops" is how much of the picture you lose filling that frame edge to edge — or keep it all and let a mat take up the difference.

The ticket

Portrait of Franz Hauer is a print by Egon Schiele (Austrian, Tulln 1890–1918 Vienna), dated 1914. Drypoint. Size on the museum record: plate: 5 x 4-1/4 inches (13 x 11 cm) sheet: 12-5/8 x 9-3/4 inches (32 x 25 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Bequest of Scofield Thayer, 1982.

In The Met's records, Portrait of Franz Hauer is a drypoint credited to Egon Schiele. The museum dates it 1914, and files it under accession 1984.1203.198.6 in Drawings and Prints. The subject is a person, so the face is the anchor. Hang it with the eyes near the centre line instead of floating high on the wall. The Met's scan measures 3,002 × 3,845 pixels, which prints about 10.0 × 12.8 in at 300 dpi and 20.0 × 25.6 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Because it runs tall, it wants a vertical frame; compare the crop percentage across sizes before you choose. Its muted earth tones are forgiving: natural wood softens the palette, walnut deepens it and black frames it like a gallery. Line work lives on contrast. Print it on smooth bright paper and give it a wider frame or mat so the fine marks are not swallowed. Add a small picture light and keep the centre of the piece around 57 inches from the floor; those two choices make a reproduction look deliberate.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,002 × 3,845 pixels — 11.5 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 10 × 12.8 in. That is bigger than the print itself, which measures about 4.3 × 5.1 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Line work lives or dies on contrast. Print it on a smooth, bright paper and give it a wide mat: small graphic work drowns in a thin frame and a big empty border makes it look like it came out of a print room drawer.
