The ticket

Saint Francis beneath a Tree, Praying is a print by Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606–1669 Amsterdam), dated 1657. Drypoint and etching, some plate tone; second state of two states. Size on the museum record: plate: 7 1/8 x 9 5/8 in. (18.1 x 24.5 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Gift of Felix M. Warburg and his family, 1941.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,654 × 2,715 pixels — 9.9 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 12.2 × 9.1 in. That is bigger than the print itself, which measures about 9.6 × 7.1 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Line work lives or dies on contrast. Print it on a smooth, bright paper and give it a wide mat: small graphic work drowns in a thin frame and a big empty border makes it look like it came out of a print room drawer.
