The ticket

The Ship of Fools is a painting by Hieronymus Bosch (Netherlandish, 's-Hertogenbosch ca. 1450–1516), dated ca. 1500. Oil on panel. Held by Musée du Louvre, Paris; the free scan comes from Wikimedia Commons.

Nobody is steering. A nun and a friar sing together to a lute, someone hangs from a turkey on a pancake-on-a-string, and a figure vomits over the side. The tree for a mast has a flag with a crescent moon on it, and an owl keeps watch. It is an unflattering portrait of the whole society for which it was made, and the boat is clearly not going anywhere. Frame it narrow and tall, and hang it in the kitchen where the party always ends up.

The work is in the public domain, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 5,367 × 9,963 pixels — 53.5 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 17.9 × 33.2 in. Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
