The ticket

Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre is a woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japanese, 1797–1861), dated ca. 1844. Woodblock print (triptych). Held by Woodblock print, Edo period; the free scan comes from Wikimedia Commons.

Kuniyoshi's huge triptych shows a skeleton towering over a young hero, a ghost raised by the witch Takiyasha to frighten her enemy. The whole thing is built from the bones: each rib, each vertebra drawn with the care of an anatomist. It is one of the most copied images in Japanese woodblock printing, and the reason many people get into ukiyo-e. The wide format makes a statement over a sofa or bed.

The work is in the public domain, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 7,139 × 3,550 pixels — 25.3 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 23.8 × 11.8 in. Woodblock prints were made to be printed again and again — a reproduction is in keeping with the whole point of the thing. Keep the paper tone warm. A printer that bleaches the ground to white-white flattens it into clip art.
