How big can you print it?

Standard frame sizes, turned to match the artwork. "Crops" is how much of the picture you lose filling that frame edge to edge — or keep it all and let a mat take up the difference.

The ticket

The Satyr's Family is a print by Jean Honoré Fragonard (French, Grasse 1732–1806 Paris), dated 1763. Etching. Size on the museum record: Sheet: 9 1/4 in. × 12 in. (23.5 × 30.5 cm) Plate: 5 11/16 × 8 3/8 in. (14.4 × 21.3 cm) Image: 5 1/4 in. × 8 in. (13.3 × 20.3 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — The Elisha Whittelsey Collection, The Elisha Whittelsey Fund, 1996.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,535 × 2,640 pixels — 9.3 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 11.8 × 8.8 in. That is roughly life-size: the print itself measures about 12 × 9.3 in.Line work lives or dies on contrast. Print it on a smooth, bright paper and give it a wide mat: small graphic work drowns in a thin frame and a big empty border makes it look like it came out of a print room drawer.
