How big can you print it?

Standard frame sizes, turned to match the artwork. "Crops" is how much of the picture you lose filling that frame edge to edge — or keep it all and let a mat take up the difference.

The ticket

A Voluptuary Under the Horrors of Digestion is a print by James Gillray (British, Chelsea 1756–1815 London), dated 1792. Etching and aquatint. Held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the free scan comes from Wikimedia Commons.

Gillray shows the Prince of Wales slumped in a chair after a heavy meal, his waistcoat open, a mass of empty bottles and unpaid bills around him. The prince was a public figure of the Regency, and the British press treated him as a joke. It is a cartoon on gluttony that a healthier modern reader can still enjoy. Print it for a dining room.

The work is in the public domain, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 2,850 × 3,539 pixels — 10.1 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 9.5 × 11.8 in. Line work lives or dies on contrast. Print it on a smooth, bright paper and give it a wide mat: small graphic work drowns in a thin frame and a big empty border makes it look like it came out of a print room drawer.
