The story

Van Gogh painted his own room in the Yellow House three times and described the intent as "rest" — flat colour, no shadows, everything squared away. The perspective is wrong on purpose.

The colours have shifted since he painted it: the walls were originally violet and faded to the blue everyone knows. Some modern reproductions restore the violet. Those are the interesting ones.

Obvious placement, correct placement. Put it in a bedroom.

What it pairs with

A bedroom, and a frame in the same wood as the bed.

Buying notes

  • Matte over glossy, always. Glossy reproductions fight every light source in a real room.
  • Go one size larger than feels sensible. Undersized art is the most common mistake there is.
  • Hang the centre of the piece at 57 inches from the floor. Non-negotiable.
  • A three-inch mat costs about eighteen dollars and does more than a two-hundred-dollar print.
Why this is free: The Bedroom entered the public domain long ago. Nobody licenses it, nobody owns the image, and the museum that holds the original isn't selling. Every link above is for a physical reproduction, not the artwork itself. Full disclosure →
