The story

Hokusai made this as a commercial print. Thousands of impressions, priced like a bowl of noodles. It was never precious. That is exactly why it survived every art movement that came after it and still looks modern hanging over a couch.

Do not get the one with the neon gradient. Get the one with the Prussian blue intact and the paper tone left slightly warm — the white-white reproductions kill it.

It handles a hallway better than almost anything else, because it reads from ten feet away and it rewards you at ten inches.

What it pairs with

A long wall and a horizontal frame with a wide mat.

Buying notes

  • Matte over glossy, always. Glossy reproductions fight every light source in a real room.
  • Go one size larger than feels sensible. Undersized art is the most common mistake there is.
  • Hang the centre of the piece at 57 inches from the floor. Non-negotiable.
  • A three-inch mat costs about eighteen dollars and does more than a two-hundred-dollar print.
Why this is free: The Great Wave off Kanagawa entered the public domain long ago. Nobody licenses it, nobody owns the image, and the museum that holds the original isn't selling. Every link above is for a physical reproduction, not the artwork itself. Full disclosure →
