The story
Van Gogh painted this outdoors, at night, on the spot, and refused to use black for the dark. The night is built out of blue and green and the light is built out of yellow. That is the whole trick, and it is why the picture glows.
It is the most ArtToGogh painting ever made: a lit-up place, open late, people still out, everything warm against a cold sky.
