The ticket

Dulle Griet (Mad Meg) is a painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (Netherlandish, Breda (?) ca. 1525–1569 Brussels), dated 1563. Oil on panel. Size on the museum record: 115 × 161 cm. Held by Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp; the free scan comes from Wikimedia Commons.

A bad-tempered woman from Flemish folklore, so greedy and so fierce that she led an army of women to plunder Hell itself. Bruegel shows her striding across a landscape full of monsters, a sword in one hand and her kitchenware in the other, as if she was running late for the shops. The scene is nearly as busy as a Bosch, and nearly as funny. Hang it opposite someone who owes you money.

The work is in the public domain, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 6,000 × 4,334 pixels — 26 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 20 × 14.4 in. The painting itself measures about 63.4 × 45.3 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
