The story
It is technically a tronie — a character study, not a commission. Nobody knows who she was, which is why she works on a wall: she is looking at you and she is not asking anything of you.
This one demands a dark background to sit against. On a white wall it floats badly. On charcoal, navy, or an oxblood wall it stops being a museum-shop image and becomes a painting again.
Small is fine here. This is the one piece on the board that survives at 12 x 16.

Buying notes
- Matte over glossy, always. Glossy reproductions fight every light source in a real room.
- Go one size larger than feels sensible. Undersized art is the most common mistake there is.
- Hang the centre of the piece at 57 inches from the floor. Non-negotiable.
- A three-inch mat costs about eighteen dollars and does more than a two-hundred-dollar print.
