The story
The Temeraire fought at Trafalgar. By 1838 she was a hulk being towed up the Thames to a breaker’s yard, and Turner painted the tug — squat, black, belching — dragging the pale ghost of her toward the scrapyard under an absurd sunset.
Turner cheated the facts freely: the masts were already gone, the sun sets in the wrong place. He was not painting an event, he was painting the end of an era, which is why it still works on people who have never heard of Trafalgar.
Voted Britain’s favourite painting more than once, and Turner refused to sell it for the rest of his life. Get it wide and let the sunset do the work.

- Matte over glossy, always. Glossy reproductions fight every light source in a real room.
- Go one size larger than feels sensible. Undersized art is the most common mistake there is.
