The ticket

A Mill Near Colchester is a work on paper by John Constable (British, East Bergholt 1776–1837 Hampstead), dated 1833. Watercolor over traces of graphite, with scratching out and a touch of pen and brown ink on the horizon, evidence of squaring for transfer in graphite, with a color wash test verso. Size on the museum record: sheet: 5 3/4 x 7 3/4 in. (14.6 x 19.7 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its Drawings and Prints collection — Purchase, David T. Schiff Gift, 2007.

The Met catalogs A Mill Near Colchester as a watercolor over traces of graphite, with scratching out and a touch of pen and brown ink on the horizon, evidence of squaring for transfer in graphite, with a color wash test verso by John Constable. The museum dates it 1833; it sits in the Drawings and Prints department as accession 2007.41. Spend a minute with the composition before choosing a size: notice where the eye lands first and where it rests. The Met's scan measures 3,625 × 2,761 pixels, which prints about 12.1 × 9.2 in at 300 dpi and 24.2 × 18.4 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Its wide proportions sit naturally over a sofa, console or bed, and the crop figures in the set builder show what a standard frame would trim. Its muted earth tones are forgiving: natural wood softens the palette, walnut deepens it and black frames it like a gallery. Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original's scale instead of blowing it up, and keep it out of direct sun like the museum does. Add a small picture light and keep the centre of the piece around 57 inches from the floor; those two choices make a reproduction look deliberate.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 3,625 × 2,761 pixels — 10 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 12.1 × 9.2 in. That is bigger than the work on paper itself, which measures about 7.8 × 5.7 in — the file holds more detail than you can see standing in front of the original.Works on paper are quiet. Print near the original’s size rather than blowing it up, mat it generously, and keep it out of direct sun — the same rules the museum follows for the real one.
