The ticket

Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds is a painting by John Constable (British, East Bergholt 1776–1837 Hampstead), dated ca. 1825. Oil on canvas. Size on the museum record: 34 5/8 x 44 in. (87.9 x 111.8 cm). The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it in its European Paintings collection — Bequest of Mary Stillman Harkness, 1950.

Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds is an oil on canvas by John Constable, part of The Met's open-access collection. The museum dates it ca. 1825, and files it under accession 50.145.8 in European Paintings. It shows a built place, with architecture and figures that read as a small stage set; the detail rewards a larger print. The Met's scan measures 1,955 × 1,541 pixels, which prints about 6.5 × 5.1 in at 300 dpi and 13.0 × 10.3 in at a still-comfortable 150 dpi. Because it runs wide, it wants a horizontal frame; check the crop percentage for each size before you commit. Its golden tones pair naturally with a gold or walnut frame, or go black for a sharper, more modern contrast. Paintings reproduce best on matte paper, since gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for. Add a small picture light and keep the centre of the piece around 57 inches from the floor; those two choices make a reproduction look deliberate.

The Met released its scan under CC0, which means no permission, no fee and no credit line required. That file is 1,955 × 1,541 pixels — 3 megapixels — good for a gallery-sharp print up to 6.5 × 5.1 in. The painting itself measures about 44 × 34.6 in, so a true life-size print runs below 300 dpi — still sharp at normal viewing distance.Paintings reproduce best on matte paper. Gloss throws glare across exactly the brushwork you came for, and a picture light does more for a print than any upgrade in paper.
