What size art goes over…

The four numbers
Two-thirds to three-quarters
Art over furniture should span between two-thirds and three-quarters of the furniture's width. Narrower and it floats like a postage stamp; wider and it fights the sofa for the room. On a bare wall, measure the stretch you want to fill and use the same band.
That is why the answer over a full-size sofa is so often a pair or a row of three: the biggest standard frame, 30 × 40, is still only 40 inches across, and a three-seater wants something closer to five feet.
57 inches to the centre
Hang the middle of the art 57 inches off the floor — roughly eye level, and the line galleries hang to. A set counts as one piece: its middle goes at 57.
8 inches of air
Over a sofa or a headboard, leave 8 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the frame. If 57 inches would crowd the furniture, the fitter raises the art until it clears.
3 inches between frames
Pairs and rows of three hang 3 inches apart. Any wider and they stop reading as one piece.
Crop or mat?
A painting rarely has the same proportions as a standard frame. Choose Fill the frameto print edge to edge; the fitter lists works that lose 15% or less. Choose Keep the whole picture to size an uncropped print inside a mat. The preview shows the border, and the receipt gives the print size and mat opening. Matted results keep at least 45% of the frame's area for the picture. Every work page has the full size chart, crop by crop.
Is the file big enough?
Every work in the fitter comes with a free public-domain file, and the fitter checks its pixels against your frame. Below 100 dots per inch a print starts to look soft, so those works drop off the list. Over a sofa you see it from across the room — "fine across a room" is fine there. Over a desk you'll want 150 or better.
